"In alignment with Science of Reading research, decodable readers instruction must follow a defined scope and sequence with ample review and repetition. At least 50% of a decodable readers lesson should be spent on applying a skill to reading and writing. It’s in the application that the learning sticks. Decodable texts are the critical application tool."
Decodable readers, also called decodable books, decodable texts, and decodable readers readers, play a major role in reading instruction. Considered a key part of a structured literacy approach, decodable books are used to help beginning readers build skills and confidence . They are sequential in nature and contain words made of letter-sounds and spelling and morphological patterns that students have been explicitly taught, as well as a small number of high-frequency words with difficult or unexpected spellings that make the text more readable. Vocabulary in the text expands as students learn new parts of the alphabetic code.
Benchmark Education Company’s high-quality sets of decodable books support educators by facilitating students’ acquisition of decodable readers and other reading skills through a specific scope and sequence—one that introduces sounds, words, and skills through a carefully planned approach. These books are designed to help build confident, proficient beginning readers.
