5 Essential Skills

Grades
K-6

Benchmark Education Company's resources are designed around the five essential components of effective reading instruction identified by scientifically based research:

  1. Phonemic Awareness
  2. Phonics
  3. Fluency
  4. Vocabulary
  5. Comprehension

Phonemic Awareness

The ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words provides an understanding that the sounds of spoken language work together to make words.

Phonics

The understanding that there is a predictable relationship between phonemes (sounds of spoke language) and graphemes (letters and spellings that represent those sounds in written language) helps readers use those relationships to accurately and automatically recognize familiar words and decode unfamiliar words.

Phonics Classroom Kits
StartUp™ (Grades K-1), BuildUp™ (Grades 1-2), and SpiralUp™ (Grades 2-3) are research-based, explicit, and systematic solutions for the phonics block in comprehensive literacy classrooms. Fluency

Fluency, the ability to read text accurately and quickly, provides a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Fluent readers recognize words and comprehend at the same time.

Vocabulary

The development of stored information about the meanings and pronunciations of words necessary for communication is categorized into four groups: listening, speaking, reading, and writing vocabularies.
